An amazing Xl of players who could be available on free transfers in summer 2024, including Mbappe, Kane and Liverpool defender

Free transfers are becoming increasingly common and some of the biggest names in football have entered the final year of their contracts.

A lot of clubs need to make some big decisions in the next few months or they risk letting a prized asset walk away for nothing in the summer of 2024.

Using data from Transfermarkt, we’ve compiled an XI of high-profile players who are out of contract at the end of the 2023/24 season, arranged in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Note: The likes of Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat are technically out of contract in 2024 but their clubs have an option to extend the deal by another year.

We’ve also left out any players that are close to signing a new deal, including Vinicius Junior and Alejandro Balde.

GK: David Raya

Raya starred for Brentford in the Premier League last season, recording 12 clean sheets in 38 appearances and making more saves (154) than any other goalkeeper in the top flight.

While Brentford are willing to make him one of the best-paid players in their history, he has outlined his desire to play in Europe and compete for titles.

“I turned down two contracts, one last year and one this January,” Raya told The Athletic. “They weren’t the offers we were looking for. I can only say that.”

The Spain international reportedly agreed personal terms with Tottenham but a deal failed to materialise as Spurs refused to meet the £40million asking price.

According to 90min, Brentford won’t sell if they don’t receive a suitable offer and are prepared to let him walk away for free in 2024.

RB: Benjamin Pavard

Pavard boasts a remarkable trophy haul, having won four Bundesliga titles, the Champions League, the DFB-Pokal, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the World Cup in the last five years.

According to Sport Bild, the 27-year-old wants to pursue a new challenge and has informed Bayern Munich that he does not wish to extend his contract beyond 2024.

He’s been linked with Manchester City and Liverpool in recent weeks but Pavard reportedly wants a free transfer in 2024 as he believes Bayern will deter sides away with their asking price.

CB: Presnel Kimpembe

Kimpembe came through Paris Saint-Germain’s academy and has now made over 200 appearances for the club, winning seven Ligue 1 titles and 12 domestic cups.

The France international – who was the subject of an offer from Chelsea last summer – recently changed his agent and reportedly wants to play abroad before the end of his career.

While talks over a contract extension have been ongoing for several months, PSG face losing him for nothing if an agreement isn’t found before the end of the season.

CB: Joel Matip

Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 and was a key part of the side that won the Champions League in 2018/19.

Injury problems halted his progress and Ibrahima Konate has now cemented himself as the first-choice partner to Virgil van Dijk.

According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, the centre-back is expected to see out the final year of his Liverpool contract rather than move on this summer.

LB: Ian Maatsen

A Chelsea academy graduate, Maatsen spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Burnley and helped them win the Championship.

While Vincent Kompany’s side want to bring the defender back to Turf  Moor, they are reluctant to meet Chelsea’s £20million asking price.

Despite the fact that he is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, Chelsea have reportedly not ruled out keeping the 21-year-old for the 2023/24 season.

CM: Adrien Rabiot

Rabiot turned down a free transfer exit from Juventus this summer to sign a contract extension at the club.

But the France international didn’t commit his long-term future to the Serie A side and will now become a free agent next summer instead.

He has repeatedly been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United among those interested.

“I have always said that I’d like to play in England in my career,” he previously admitted. “I still have that desire. I’d like to evolve in the Premier League.”

CM: Piotr Zielinski

Zielinksi rediscovered his best form in 2022/23, helping Napoli win their first Scudetto in 33 years with three goals and nine assists in 37 Serie A appearances.

“I have a year left in my contract and after the season my agent will surely talk to the club and we’ll take decisions,” he told Sky Sport in May. “As I’ve always said, I am happy at Napoli and I’d like to stay.”

However, the midfielder is one of their highest earners and Il Mattino claim that he will only be offered a new contract if he accepts a pay cut.

Liverpool have been long-term admirers of the Poland international, who has also attracted interest from West Ham, Lazio and Juventus.

RW: Ousmane Dembele

After a difficult start to his Barcelona career, Dembele has turned things around and is now thriving under the tutelage of Xavi.

The France international registered five goals and seven assists as Barcelona won La Liga in 2022/23 and is keen to extend his stay at Camp Nou.

“It’s going very well,” Dembele recently told Marca. “Barcelona want me to renew until 2027, my representative will talk to them. I am happy at the team, also at home, in Barcelona. We’ll see what happens with the matter.”

But Barcelona’s financial struggles have created significant uncertainty over a number of potential contract extensions and they need to trim more salary from their books.

Ousmane Dembele and Gavi

CAM: Thomas Muller

A one-club man, Muller has made over 650 appearances for Bayern Munich, winning 12 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues, six DFB Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups.

But the 33-year-old has recently fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel, who has put his faith in Jamal Musiala.

According to reports in Germany, Bayern want to keep Muller until his contract expires in 2024 and will then try and sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

LW: Kylian Mbappe

Despite being Paris St Germain’s all-time top goalscorer, Mbappe’s relationship with the Ligue 1 side is now starting to sour.

The World Cup winner recently sent a formal letter to the club’s hierarchy, informing them of his decision not to take up the option of a one-year contract extension.

While PSG are keen to avoid losing their star asset for free, he is reportedly willing to dig his heels in and sit on the bench for the whole of the 2023/24 season.

According to L’Equipe, PSG believe that the 25-year-old has already agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer.

ST: Harry Kane

Having failed to win a major trophy at Tottenham, Kane is now looking to explore pastures new in his pursuit of silverware.

Bayern Munich have made two unsuccessful bids for the striker while Manchester United, Paris-Saint Germain and Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation.

Daniel Levy is believed to be reluctant to offload Kane this summer, even though he has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract.

According to reports, the 29-year-old will not sign a new deal at Tottenham and is willing to run down his contract in order to seal a free transfer in 2024.

Substitutes: Manuel Neuer, Kyle Walker, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Thiago, Koke, Toni Kroos, Nico Williams, Alvaro Morata, Mehdi Taremi.
