Why the Antarctic Sea Ice Decline Matters | International – Times of India Videos

Broxton Bird is an associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Indiana University Indianapolis.Bird states traditionally, Antarctic sea ice has been relatively stable in comparison with Arctic sea ice, which has shown a long-term decline over the last few decades. In contrast, Antarctic sea ice has slightly increased over the last few decades up until about 2016, after which point there has been a precipitous decline in Antarctic sea ice. The current minimum in Antarctic sea ice, which is the largest decline in recorded history, is unusual. The exact causes for this one year of precipitous decline is not clear, but it is almost certainly related to changes in oceanic surface temperatures, as well as increased atmospheric temperatures around Antarctica. Everything within the climate system is interconnected. Changes in Antarctic sea ice, though remote, have tremendous impact on ocean and atmospheric systems.
